I’m David — Colombian-born engineer, lifelong sports fanatic, and someone who spent years chasing footballs and gravel roads long before either was a career path. I eventually migrated to the U.S., built a career consulting on data analytics for companies like Microsoft itself, and figured that was the story. It wasn’t.
The real story starts with Casa de Campo La Giralda in Mariquita — my family’s estate for three generations, tucked into Colombia’s coffee region beside a climb called Alto de Letras. When my mother passed, my sisters wanted nothing to do with the property, so I listed it on Airbnb, mostly to keep it alive. Oh, surprise! Cyclists from around the world started booking, and they all told me the same things: nowhere reliable to stay, no English-speaking hosts, no guided cycling tours built for serious riders, no one who understood what a hard day in the saddle actually demands.
I’d lived next to Alto de Letras my whole life without knowing it was legendary — the climb that shaped Colombian cycling long before Nairo Quintana or Egan Bernal ever turned a pedal. Once we found out, my wife Luisa and I built Beyond The Ride to fix exactly what those cyclists kept asking for.
None of it would exist without her. Luisa is a marine biologist by training, having spent years as an environmental scientist across Colombia before turning her attention to hospitality — and it turns out the same rigor she brought to field science, she brought to running an estate. She personally manages every detail of every guest and trip at La Giralda, which is how we’ve held Airbnb Superhost status four years running with a 4.92-star rating, and how Casa de Campo La Giralda became the number-one preferred listing in Mariquita for cyclists and large family reunions alike. She’s the reason the property succeeded long before Beyond The Ride existed, and she’s the one who turns my crazy ideas into premium cycling holidays that actually work in the field.
When we’re not running trips, we’re chasing our own adventures — hiking U.S. national parks like Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Zion, skiing Colorado every year, and road cycling across Texas together. That exposure to upscale outdoor experiences in North America is exactly why we insisted on bringing that same level of polish to guided cycling tours across Latin America.
Latin America holds some of the greatest untapped cycling terrain on earth — the Andes stretching across Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and Argentina, Mexico’s Sierra Madre, and Central America’s volcanic highlands and cordilleras all offer climbs most international cyclists have never heard of.
